What three days actually coversWHAT IT COVERS
Two formats are common: Chongqing to Maoping or Taipingxi (one way, disembark on day 3 and transfer about 1.5 hours by coach to Yichang), and Chongqing to Fengjie and back (round trip on the same ship).
The first passes Qutang and Wu gorges and usually calls at White Emperor City or Goddess Stream; the second focuses on Qutang Gorge and White Emperor City and does not pass Wu Gorge on the return leg. Neither includes the Three Gorges Dam, which lies beyond Xiling Gorge.
A few 3-day products combine a Wushan or Fengjie landing with a highway return, which shortens shore time further. Before booking, clarify the final pier and whether the dam is included — those two answers decide whether the trip is worth it.
Day-by-day timeline (Chongqing to Maoping)DAY BY DAY

Day 1: board in the late afternoon at Chaotianmen or Guoyuan port in Chongqing, sail after dinner. See Hongyadong and Jiefangbei beforehand and check your bags onto the ship early.
Day 2: shore visit in the morning (usually Fengdu or Shibaozhai), then Qutang Gorge and Kuimen in the afternoon, with an evening call at White Emperor City or entry into Wu Gorge. This is the densest day — do not over-plan it.
Day 3: Wu Gorge at dawn (Goddess Peak section), disembark at Maoping after breakfast, then about 1.5 hours by coach to Yichang East station or Sanxia airport. If you are continuing to Wuhan or Zhangjiajie, take an afternoon departure.
How it differs from 4D3NVS 4D3N
The extra day adds the Three Gorges Dam and Xiling Gorge, usually one more shore site such as Three Gorges Family or Qu Yuan's Hometown, and a clean disembarkation in Yichang with no mid-trip coach transfer.
The price difference is usually small: the short cruise saves time rather than money, since per-cabin rates are similar with fewer shore inclusions. Per night, three days often costs more.
If you only have three days, the short cruise still delivers: Kuimen in Qutang Gorge and Goddess Peak in Wu Gorge are the two most photographed stretches, and two nights is enough to see them. Just do not expect the full highlights in one go.
Who it suits and who should skip itWHO IT SUITS
Suits: three days of leave, travellers who have already seen the dam, gorge-focused visitors, families wanting a short hop, and anyone using the ship as a moving hotel en route to Chongqing.
Skip if: it is your first Yangtze trip, the dam and ship lift are musts, mobility issues make coach transfers hard, or you expect big nightly shows.
For those cases, take the 4-day downstream or 5-day upstream sailing — both are markedly more complete on shore content and comfort.
FAQFAQ
Does a 3-day cruise reach the Three Gorges Dam?
Usually not. The dam sits downstream of Xiling Gorge and short sailings end at Maoping or Taipingxi. To include it, take 4D3N downstream or 5D4N upstream.
How do I get to Yichang after disembarking?
Shuttle coaches run from Maoping and Taipingxi piers to Yichang East station and Sanxia airport in about 1-1.5 hours. Most sailings include the transfer — confirm at booking and allow for peak traffic.
Is there English service on short sailings?
Ships aimed at international guests have English cruise directors and shore guides; domestic-focused short sailings are weaker in English. State your language needs before booking.
