Can You Sail a Three Gorges Cruise Alone?SOLO

Absolutely — and Three Gorges cruises are quite friendly to solo travelers: meals, lodging, and transport are all on board and shore excursions are led by guides, so there is no pressure of "finding your own way"; onboard lectures, shows, and public decks also provide natural social settings. The Three Gorges reservoir has calm water and slow sailing speeds, with very high safety.

First understand one principle: Three Gorges cruise tickets are priced per person — the price includes a berth, a dining seat, attraction admission, and guide service, all charged per head. So the "per-person cost" is identical whether you travel alone or with a companion; the only difference is how the room is allocated — which brings us to the "single supplement."

What Is the Single Supplement?SINGLE SUPPLEMENT

Standard cabins on Three Gorges cruises are twin rooms, and quotes are calculated on "two people sharing one room." If a solo traveler wants a standard cabin all to themselves, the room's cost has no second person to share it, so the difference must be made up — the "single supplement." The amount varies by ship and sailing date and is higher in peak season. Once you understand the single supplement, you can see where each of the three solo options saves.

Simply put: the twin price = berth + meals + admission + service (per person); a solo traveler occupying a standard cabin = no one to share the room portion of the twin price, so the difference must be paid.

Three Options: Cabin Sharing, Sole Occupancy, Extra BedOPTIONS

Option 1: Cabin sharing (cheapest)

Most cruise lines offer same-gender cabin sharing for solo bookers: share a standard cabin with another solo traveler of the same gender, each paying the rate without the single supplement. If no match is found, generally one person is given the standard cabin alone without paying the difference (subject to each cruise line's rules). For budget-first travelers who don't mind sharing with a stranger.

Option 2: Sole occupancy (most private)

That is, one traveler taking the whole standard cabin, with the single supplement added — typically 75%-100% of the ticket fare (standards differ by ship; subject to the written confirmation at the time of booking). For travelers who value privacy and sleep quality with a looser budget.

Option 3: Extra bed (special cases)

When three people travel together and want one room, most ships can arrange an extra bed, with the room cost split three ways — cheapest per person. Solo travelers generally don't need an extra bed, but if you're traveling as a group of three with friends, this is worth considering.

Not all sailings open cabin sharing; the policy relates to cabin tier — before booking, confirm with us whether your target sailing accepts solo cabin sharing, subject to the written confirmation at the time of booking.

Documents and Health Requirements for Solo TravelDOCS

Documents: exactly the same as other travelers — mainland Chinese residents with a valid original ID card (children under 16 may use the household registration booklet); foreign travelers with passport and a valid Chinese visa; Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan travelers with the Home Return Permit/Taiwan Compatriot Permit originals; all required for boarding, check-in, and security — check document validity before departure.

Health: Three Gorges cruises impose no separate restrictions on solo travelers, but minors and travelers over 70 must be in good health; travelers over 70 must be accompanied by a family member and sign a guardianship commitment, and those traveling alone must also sign a health declaration and a liability waiver — senior travelers who want to "go alone" should first confirm they meet these conditions. All travelers are advised to purchase travel accident insurance on their own.

Solo Itinerary TipsRHYTHM

① Choose the upstream route (Yichang → Chongqing, 5 days 4 nights) for a more relaxed pace, more lectures and activities — easier for a solo traveler to blend into onboard life — and typically lower fares than downstream; ② Follow the guide closely on shore excursions and remember the meeting time — the ship leaves on time and will not wait for individuals; ③ Carry valuables with you or use the safe, and lock the cabin when leaving; ④ The deck wind is strong — dress warm, and watch your footing on wet decks at night; ⑤ Cabin-sharing guests should observe onboard quiet hours and be considerate of each other.

The onboard medical office has a ship's doctor available for house calls around the clock (medical services cost extra); bringing your own common medicines is reassuring. See the FAQ for more boarding and onboard details.

Booking TipsBOOKING

The solo booking process is the same as any order: choose a ship → order and pay → customer service re-confirms and the contract is signed → pier and time notification one day before boarding. Confirm three things with us before ordering: ① whether the sailing opens same-gender cabin sharing; ② the single-supplement rate for sole occupancy (commonly 75%-100%); ③ the refund and change standards (subject to the written confirmation at the time of booking). Start ship selection from the homepage's 8-level quick-reference table; solid mid-tier ships such as the Century Oasis, Victoria Sabrina, and President No. 7 are all good choices for solo travelers.
