Winter Three Gorges Cruise Guide

Low-season prices · January and March cheapest · Spring Festival sailing notes · Dry-season transfer tips · Telephone +86-23-63629700
Winter has the fewest visitors and the lowest prices in the Three Gorges — a quiet river and a cold, crisp gorge have a stark beauty of their own. But winter is also the season with the fewest sailings and the greatest travel variables, so it is especially important to understand the calendar and transfer rules before setting off. Schedules and prices are subject to the written confirmation at the time of booking.

Low-Season Prices: January and March Are CheapestLOW SEASON

December to February is the year's low season, with ticket prices at their lowest. January and March are usually the cheapest — January has the coldest weather and the least travel demand, while March is the start of the resumption period; prices in both months are often well below the spring and autumn peaks.

For budget-conscious travelers who still want a luxury cruise, winter is a great chance to "stay on a premium ship at a modest price": the same room type and service, often at prices far below September or October. With fewer guests on board, dining, viewing, and using the facilities are all more relaxed.

Note: The exact seasonal division and prices are subject to the written confirmation at the time of booking.

Maintenance Lay-Ups and Spring Festival SailingsSPRING FESTIVAL

Two arrangements in winter must be understood in advance:

· Maintenance lay-ups: some routes are gradually laid up from November as ships enter dock for maintenance and repairs; ships and sailings in operation during winter are noticeably fewer than in other seasons. If you plan a winter trip, first confirm your target ship's operations for that month with us, then arrange your long-distance transport;
· Spring Festival sailings: a small number of sailings operate around Chinese New Year. Note in particular that Spring Festival sailings, covering New Year's Eve through the 15th day of the first lunar month, count as holiday sailings — prices differ from the shoulder season and refund and change rules are strict. Confirm the refund and change terms item by item with us before ordering.

For families who want to spend New Year on the water, Spring Festival sailings have a festive atmosphere of their own — but be sure to book well in advance and lock in your room type.

Dry-Season Transfers and Over-the-Dam TipsTRANSIT

Winter is the Yangtze's dry season, and falling water levels may trigger maritime management measures. Be prepared for these two arrangements:

· Transfer: under Yangtze River maritime authority regulations, when dry-season water levels fall below the required standard, vessels of 130 meters or more in length may not sail above Fuling Lidu; ships then dock at Fengdu or Fuling Port instead, and guests are transferred by coach arranged by the cruise line (about a 2-3 hour drive). A transfer is a mandatory requirement issued by the maritime authorities based on real-time water levels — not a decision by the cruise line; ships under 130 meters have an extremely low chance of transfers;
· Over-the-dam: most cruises dock at ports upstream of the dam and then take guests by coach "over the dam" to downtown Yichang — this applies in winter too, so arrive at the notified time and meeting point on time.

With a transfer or over-the-dam arrangement, the itinerary may run 1-2 hours earlier than originally planned — leave extra margin for your onward transport.

Packing Advice: A Down Jacket Is EssentialPACKING

Winter along the Three Gorges is damp and cold, and the river wind on deck is biting — it feels colder than in the city, so staying warm comes first:

· Outer layer: a down jacket or thick down vest — essential for deck viewing;
· Inner layer: thermal underwear plus a sweater, easy to add or remove when moving between the heated cabins;
· Accessories: hat, scarf, and windproof gloves — especially needed for early-morning and evening viewing;
· Footwear: warm, non-slip sneakers or boots; steps are slippery in rain and morning dew;
· Others: lip balm and moisturizer (the river wind is dry); compact rain gear in case of winter rain.

Winter days are short, so concentrate sightseeing around the warm midday light; shore sights from the second day onward are mostly scheduled in daylight too.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ&A

Is a winter Three Gorges cruise worth it?

Yes — provided you accept the cold and fewer sailings. Low-season visitors are few and prices are attractive; the river is quiet and the mountains crisply clear, so travelers who love tranquility and photography often prefer winter. Water in the Three Gorges reservoir is calm, and with all meals and lodging on board, winter cruising is not a hardship.

Are there ships every day around Spring Festival?

No. Only a small number of sailings operate around Spring Festival, and they count as holiday sailings with strict refund and change rules. Once your dates are fixed, ask us and book as early as possible.

Recommended Ships and Further ReadingEXPLORE

For winter travel, we recommend two ships well suited to quietly savoring the river scenery:

· Yangtze Memory — on longer routes such as Chongqing to Wuhan, it passes the five-stage ship lock and the Gezhouba lock on its own hull; a fine choice for an in-depth winter long-route trip;
· Victoria Sabrina — the flagship of the Victoria series, with quiet full-electric propulsion; comfortable, cozy cabin viewing.
