Autumn Season: September-October Is Peak SeasonPEAK SEASON
In the Three Gorges cruise calendar, September and October are the year's peak season — crisp autumn air, little rain, a calm river: the most comfortable cruising season, and also the period with the highest concentration of overseas visitors.
Peak season means: every sailing fully booked, suites on popular ships in short supply, and prices at their annual high. If you plan to travel in September-October, be sure to book well in advance. Sailings around the Golden Week holiday count as holiday sailings with stricter refund and change rules — confirm the terms with us before placing your order.
Best Red Leaf Period: Late November to Early DecemberRED LEAVES
Three Gorges red leaves are mostly smoke tree and pistache, turning red from high altitude downwards: coloring begins in late October, and late November to early December is the best viewing window, when autumn color is at its deepest and the leaves at their most vivid, with crisp river wind and crystal-clear skies — a golden period for photography.
The top viewing spot is Wu Gorge: as the ship sails through, the red leaf belt on both banks stretches from the river's edge all the way to the clifftops, and around Goddess Peak the leaves and drifting mist set each other off — the most iconic Three Gorges red leaf scene. The Chijia Mountain at the entrance of Qutang Gorge and the panoramic view from high up in Baidicheng each have their own charm too.
Into December the weather turns colder and some routes begin to be laid up for maintenance from November, so red leaf season has fewer sailings than spring or autumn — when you find your date, book without hesitation.
Autumn Packing and Deck ViewingPACKING
Autumn days and nights in the Three Gorges differ sharply in temperature: comfortable in the daytime sun, but the river wind on deck is strong and mornings and evenings turn distinctly cool — and red leaf viewing often means an hour or two outside, so warmth matters:
· Sept-Oct: a long-sleeve shirt or light sweater as a base, plus a jacket or windbreaker;
· From November: a sweater plus a thick coat; bring a lightweight down jacket if you feel the cold;
· All season: non-slip walking shoes (many shore steps), sun-protective clothing, hat and sunglasses (autumn UV is still strong), compact rain gear in case of autumn rain;
· For photographers: windproof gloves for long morning vigils at your spot on deck.

Itinerary Advice: How to See the Most Red LeavesITINERARY
Whether upstream or downstream, the Wu Gorge section is the heart of the red leaf scenery, and each direction has its strengths:
· Downstream (Chongqing → Yichang): 4 days 3 nights. Faster with the current, punctual daytime port calls; Qutang Gorge and Wu Gorge are usually passed in daylight — suits travelers with limited time;
· Upstream (Yichang → Chongqing): 5 days 4 nights. Slower sailing with ample viewing time, usually cheaper, and typically one extra shore stop — suits travelers who want to savor the red leaves slowly.
If you want to get up close to the red leaf belt, look for sailings that include a sightseeing-boat transfer into Shennong Stream or the Lesser Three Gorges — deep into the tributary gorges, the leaves are right before your eyes.
Frequently Asked QuestionsQ&A
Which ships are still sailing in November?
From November, some ships are laid up for maintenance one after another, but several flagship ships still operate red leaf season sailings. For exactly which ships sail in November and December, please ask us for that month's schedule.
Are exact red leaf dates guaranteed?
Red leaves depend on temperatures and shift slightly earlier or later each year. Late November to early December is the most reliable best window, but the exact color in any given week is hard to predict precisely — go by the actual foliage in your travel year.
