China Yangtze Three Gorges Cruise Booking

The Three Gorges Dam Ship Lift Explained

113 m vertical lift · 40-60 minutes · how it differs from the locks
Bottom line first: if riding the 'ship elevator' matters to you, check that your itinerary says ship lift, not five-stage locks. They are completely different ways of passing the dam, and the time difference is more than fourfold.

What the ship lift is: a lift for shipsHOW IT WORKS

The Three Gorges Dam has two ship-passing structures: the five-stage locks and the ship lift. The locks fill and drain chamber by chamber and take 3-4 hours to pass. The ship lift drives the vessel into a water-filled caisson and raises it vertically, water and all, about 113 metres in 40-60 minutes.

The caisson takes vessels up to 3,000 tonnes. Your ship enters, is secured, lifted and released upstream, and passengers stay on board throughout. For travellers this is one of the few genuine engineering moments of the trip rather than a transport leg.

From the deck you watch the caisson climb the tower, the dam crest slowly come level with your eyes, then the gates open onto the reservoir. It lasts maybe fifteen minutes and is what many guests remember longest.

The lift is a restricted navigation facility and pauses for maintenance or scheduling. Confirm your specific sailing uses it — do not rely on a brochure saying 'ship lift experience available'.

Which sailings actually use the liftSHIP LIFT OR LOCKS

Not every itinerary uses the lift. Both downstream (Chongqing to Yichang) and upstream (Yichang to Chongqing) routes have sailings that do and sailings that do not. There is one reliable test: read whether the day-by-day detail says 'ship lift' or 'five-stage locks'. If it says locks, the experience is different.

Some itineraries offer the lift as an optional shore add-on on a sightseeing boat, which is separate from your cruise ship passing the dam. If this is a priority, say so when booking and we will shortlist sailings that genuinely transit the lift.

There is also the case of a schedule change or dam-area dispatch switching your transit to the locks. This is usually notified in advance; if it happens, ask the ship for written confirmation.

On shore: Tanziling and the 185 platformON SHORE

The dam visitor area usually covers Tanziling (panorama over the locks and the dam), the 185 viewing platform at crest elevation 185 m, and the river-closure memorial park. The site is large, with shuttle carts inside, moderate walking and plenty of steps and slopes.

English commentary is normally arranged with the ship; signage and announcements on site are mainly Chinese. Remember your cart and meeting times — you cannot wander off alone here, and regrouping is slow.

A sensible photo order: panorama at Tanziling, dam crest at the 185 platform, then the memorial park. Morning light is cleaner; in the afternoon the dam face is backlit.

The dam area runs 2-4 C colder than the city with strong gorge wind. A light windproof layer beats an umbrella in any season.

Who it suits and what to watchGOOD TO KNOW

If you are uneasy with heights, the caisson edge gives a strong sense of altitude — stay inside or on the inner walkway and you still see everything. If you want to photograph over the rail, watch your footing.

Wheelchair users and slower walkers can join, but there are steps and a gap between ship and caisson, and the site carts need advance notice. Tell us at booking rather than at the pier.

Mobile signal weakens noticeably around the transit. Do not schedule a family call across that window, and download anything you need beforehand.

FAQFAQ

Ship lift or five-stage locks, which is better?

Different experiences. The lift is a 40-60 minute vertical rise with concentrated drama; the locks are a 3-4 hour step-by-step descent where you see the whole process. Limited time, choose the lift; want the full lock operation, choose a lock transit.

Does the ship lift cost extra?

Depends on the sailing. If the itinerary says the lift is included, it is in the fare; if it says optional, a separate sightseeing ticket applies. Confirm at booking, not on board.

Can a guest with limited mobility ride it?

Yes, with advance notice and crew assistance. There are steps and a gap between ship and caisson, and wheelchair transfer needs ship staff, so raise it early in peak season.
