Spring is the gentlest season of the year in the Three Gorges — mountain flowers bloom along the river and mist wraps the gorges, while avoiding the summer heat and the autumn crowds. This guide covers spring sailing schedules, weather, price seasons, and packing essentials. Schedules and prices are subject to the written confirmation at the time of booking.

Resumption Dates: Cruises Set Sail Again in March-AprilSEASON START

Premium Three Gorges cruises generally resume operations in March and April each year. Ships laid up for winter maintenance return to service one after another; from early March, sailings across brands gradually restart, and by April operations are essentially back in full swing.

Please note: in the early resumption period, some cruises have not yet published a full schedule and available departure dates are relatively concentrated. If you plan to travel in March, we recommend checking the month's schedule for your target ship in advance, and arranging your long-distance transport only after confirming that your preferred ship and route are back in operation.

March is shoulder season, with friendlier prices than the peak season after mid-April. If your vacation dates are flexible, late March is the sweet spot — fewer people, better prices, and scenery already at its best.

Spring Weather and SceneryWEATHER

Spring weather in the Three Gorges is mild, and the feel on deck is comfortable — perfect for spending long hours sightseeing on the open deck. Mountain flowers bloom on both banks at this time: cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, and rapeseed flowers open along the river in succession, while mist in the gorges changes constantly — a favorite season for photographers.

Spring highlights:

· Mountain flowers and fresh greenery adorn the cliff walls of Qutang Gorge and Wu Gorge;
· Morning mist and seas of clouds are frequent, with Wu Gorge's morning views especially outstanding;
· Shore sights (Baidicheng, Shennong Stream, the Three Gorges Dam, etc.) enjoy moderate temperatures — walking tours are not stuffy.

For families traveling with seniors, spring temperatures are also the friendliest — no blazing summer sun and no cold autumn or winter wind, so deck viewing and shore walks are effortless. If you can only pick one season for a Three Gorges cruise, spring is the answer for many seasoned travelers.

Price Seasons: Peak Season Begins After April 15PRICE

The Three Gorges cruise price seasons are roughly as follows: before April 15 is shoulder season with relatively affordable prices; after April 15 the peak season begins and prices rise accordingly — the whole of May, plus September and October, are all peak season.

So even within spring, prices in early April and late April can differ noticeably. Budget-conscious travelers can lock in sailings before April 15; those seeking the best scenery and the fullest facilities can choose late April to May — and book earlier still to secure a cabin.

Note: The exact seasonal division and prices are subject to the written confirmation at the time of booking.

Packing Advice: Light Jacket, Layered ClothingPACKING

Spring days and nights in the Three Gorges differ greatly in temperature, and the river wind on deck can be strong, so "onion-style" layered clothing works best:

· Inner layer: comfortable, breathable long-sleeve clothing;
· Middle layer: a sweater or light knit;
· Outer layer: a windproof light jacket or trench coat — essential for early-morning and evening deck viewing;
· Footwear: non-slip walking shoes (most shore sights are paths and steps);
· Others: compact rain gear (occasional spring showers), sun-protective clothing, hat, and sunglasses (deck UV is not weak on sunny days).

Around the Qingming Festival, a late cold snap can make it feel nearly like early winter on the river — it is safer to pack a slightly thicker jacket.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ&A

Which ships are already sailing in early March?

Resumption dates differ by brand. In March, some flagship ships are usually already operating, but sailings are sparse. Please confirm your target ship's schedule for that month with us before booking, to avoid a mismatch with your flights or trains.

Does spring rain affect sightseeing?

Spring showers happen occasionally, but most are passing showers — and rain adds atmosphere to the misty gorges. Just bring compact rain gear. If shore excursions meet rain, watch for slippery steps and slow your pace.

Recommended Ships and Further ReadingEXPLORE

For spring travel, we especially recommend two ships:

· Yangtze Melody — under 130 meters in length, an extremely low chance of transfers, flexible itineraries; a great fit for a short spring holiday;
