The typical upstream rhythm: board at Zigui Port in the early evening of day one, tour the Three Gorges Dam first, then call at shore sights such as Shennong Stream, Baidicheng, and Fengdu Ghost City, arriving at Chongqing Chaotianmen on the morning of the last day to disembark.

Sailing against the current is slower (about 15-18 km/h), leaving more daytime sailing hours, more leisurely shore excursions, and more onboard cultural lectures and evening events. For travelers with ample vacation time who want to savor the Yangtze slowly, the upstream experience is noticeably more "in depth."

One commonly mentioned drawback of upstream: lock passage often occurs in the early morning hours. However, for most Chongqing-Yichang cruises, ships do not actually pass the five-stage ship lock on their own hull — they dock at a port upstream of the dam and travel over the dam by coach. The typical downstream rhythm: board and set sail from Chongqing Chaotianmen in the early evening of day one, then call at shore sights such as Fengdu Ghost City, Shennong Stream or the Lesser Three Gorges, and the Three Gorges Dam, disembarking at Zigui Port, Yichang on the morning of the last day.

Sailing with the current is fast (about 28-30 km/h), and the ship rarely sails at night, so sleep is not disturbed; daytime port-call times are punctual and the itinerary is compact and efficient. The drawback is that gorge passage is brief — for example, Qutang Gorge takes only a few minutes when sailing downstream, so you need to seize the moment for deck photos.

Downstream includes one fewer night on board, and overall quotes are usually higher, but it saves one day of vacation — ideal for travelers short on time who want to take fewer days off.

If you arrive in Yichang first (for example, coming from the Wuhan direction) and want to continue from Chongqing afterward (for example, onward to Chengdu or Xi'an), upstream fits your route; conversely, if you tour downtown Chongqing first (Hongyadong, Ciqikou) and then head to Yichang to connect with high-speed rail or flights, downstream suits you better.

③ By onboard experience: If you value quiet nights and punctual daytime schedules, choose downstream (the ship rarely sails at night); if you prefer richer onboard activities and a slower sightseeing pace, choose upstream.
