What Is the Dry Season?SEASON
The Yangtze is a seasonal river. Each year the winter/spring season (roughly December through early April) is the dry period: upstream inflow decreases and the Yangtze water level around Chaotianmen in Chongqing drops noticeably. In the flood season, levels rise again, and the Three Gorges reservoir also regulates the water level in front of the dam according to its dispatching plan.
Once the level drops, the water in front of the piers becomes too shallow, and large, deep-draft cruise ships may be unable to berth at piers in downtown Chongqing — this is the root cause of "transfers". Travellers planning winter/spring trips are advised to first learn the upstream vs downstream basics, then read this article to set expectations.
Transfer Trigger Conditions: Two Water-Level ThresholdsTHRESHOLD
Under Yangtze River maritime regulations, when the following water-level conditions are met, vessels over 130 meters in overall length may not sail upstream beyond Fuling Lidu:
· The water level at Chongqing (Yangjiaotan) falls below 5.0 meters; and/or
· The water level in front of the Three Gorges Dam falls below 152.0 meters.
At such times, large cruise ships berth instead at Fengdu or Fuling Port, and guests transfer by road to and from downtown Chongqing. In addition, high flood levels, severe weather, or ad hoc no-sail notices from the authorities can also cause transfers or other itinerary adjustments.
How Transfers Work: Ship Berths at Fengdu/Fuling, 2-3 Hours by RoadHOW
Typical arrangements during a transfer:
· Downstream travellers (departing Chongqing): instead of boarding at Chaotianmen, the cruise line arranges a coach from downtown Chongqing for a road transfer to Fengdu or Fuling Port to board — a drive of about 2-3 hours. The Chongqing meeting time is generally earlier than normal boarding (commonly around 14:00-16:00);
· Upstream travellers (departing Yichang): after the ship berths at Fengdu or Fuling, guests finish the itinerary on board as usual, and the cruise line arranges a coach for a road transfer to downtown Chongqing to disembark — also about 2-3 hours.
The transfer coach is arranged by the cruise line, with luggage carried on the same vehicle; onboard meals, accommodation, and sightseeing standards are unchanged — only the boarding/disembarkation pier and the transportation method are adjusted. The dam-area stopover and the over-the-dam arrangement may also be adjusted together with water levels.
Which Ships Rarely Transfer?SHIPS
The regulation restricts vessels "over 130 meters in overall length", so small and mid-sized cruise ships shorter than 130 meters are extremely unlikely to be affected, and their winter/spring sailings can generally board and disembark at Chaotianmen in Chongqing as usual. Common examples:
· Yangtze Melody;
· Interstellar Athena, Interstellar Apollo;
· Huaxia No. 2.
If you are deliberately travelling in the winter/spring dry season and care strongly about "boarding at Chaotianmen no matter what", put these smaller ships at the top of your list. That said, even small ships may face adjustments in extreme water conditions or ad hoc authority controls — the actual operation of the sailing prevails.
If a Transfer Happens: How Travellers Should CooperateRESPONSE
① Follow the arrangements: a transfer is a mandatory safety requirement from the maritime authorities based on real-time water levels — not a choice by the cruise line or booking platform. Take the coach at the notified meeting time and place; do not head to the originally scheduled pier on your own;
② Allow extra time: on transfer day, the meeting time may be 1-2 hours earlier than originally planned. Keep your phone reachable and watch for the customer service notice one day before boarding;
③ Build slack into your transport: choose flexible flight/train times to and from Chongqing; arrival and departure times downtown on transfer day follow the actual notice;
④ Luggage as usual: large luggage travels with the transfer coach; keep valuables with you;
⑤ Stay relaxed: onboard meals, accommodation, and sightseeing are unaffected — a transfer only changes how you board or disembark.
Who pays for the extra travel time caused by a transfer?
A transfer is a mandatory safety arrangement in the category of force majeure. The transfer coach is arranged by the cruise line at no extra charge to travellers. How far in advance will I know whether a transfer will happen?
Water levels change daily, so it is usually only a few days before boarding that things become clear. We inform travellers as soon as we receive notice from the cruise line or the authorities; the notice one day before boarding is the final word.
Will a transfer shorten the itinerary or cut sights?
Generally not. Onboard meals, lodging, and scheduled sightseeing are unchanged; what changes is the boarding/disembarkation pier and the transportation to and from the city. In individual cases the order of the itinerary may be slightly adjusted — the ship's actual arrangements prevail.
Can I get a refund or change my date?
